GALLERY HAPPENINGS - April 2025
Nature Meets High-Tech at Gallery Moab
by Thea Nordling

Gallery Moab, a cooperative gallery owned and operated by local artists, features a wide variety of original fine art and artisan crafts inspired by our spectacular landscape and its geology, flora and fauna. Our artists work in different mediums and styles, each with a unique vision and point of view. Every month a special guest artist is invited to be in the spotlight, showing the wealth of artistic talent in our community.

Our April Guest Artist, Charlie Brown, combines his high-tech skills with a love of nature to create sculptures and wall hangings using 3-D printing learned during his engineering career with natural objects found during his wanderings in the canyon country.

Brown recounts his artistic journey:
“My story of delving into various forms of art began after my retirement as an engineer of 30 years. It was a shared adventure with my wonderful wife, Susie. Digital photography was our first endeavor. We presented our work in shows for many years and were highly successful; however, our priorities changed when we added Bernese Mountain Dogs to the mix. They had no patience for photography. Our hiking adventures with them became the daily routine, and there was no better place to explore than in the beautiful desert and canyons near Moab. It was along the many trails hiking with Susie and Trace, that gave me the idea of my present art adventure – using sticks and stones we I gathered along our path.

It all started with those beautiful and sometimes silly birds that we met along the way, the raven. We learned to love ravens and decided it would be fun to honor them with a tribute. As we studied them and about them, we found that they have a rich and varied presence in mythology and folklore across cultures, often embodying complex symbolism ranging from wisdom and prophecy to death and trickery. Their black feathers and carrion-eating habits tied them to death and the supernatural, while their intelligence earned them respect as messengers or guides. So, with our collected sticks and stones, we present to you wall hangings and dioramas of ravens. All pieces of rock, stick and bone were found on trails around Moab. The representative ravens are 3-D printed resin, in various ratios, then painted with acrylics with an iridescent application to make them realistic. Please enjoy! “

On Friday, April 4 during Art Walk the gallery is hosting a reception from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. It’s an opportunity for visitors, friends and community members to meet Brown, learn more about his work, and help him celebrate his muse, the iconic raven. Come mingle with local artists and art lovers and enjoy refreshments.
