GALLERY HAPPENINGS - February 2024
February at Gallery Moab
by Thea Nordling

Love is in the air this month, so they say! What better way to express love than through the creative process? In the words of Marc Chagall, “Art must be an expression of love or it is nothing.”

Jesse HoughGallery Moab, a cooperative gallery owned and operated by a group of local artists, has been a labor of love since 2014, celebrating our beloved landscape through the creation of handmade, original fine art and artisan crafts to share with our community and visitors. We work in many different mediums and styles, so there is something for every taste and budget. We invite you to come in and enjoy the colorful ambiance of this gathering place for artists and art lovers.

Our featured artist in February is Jess Hough, a local artist, carpenter and printmaker. She first moved to Moab in 2016, working for Community Rebuilds. By combining her artistic and carpentry skills, she has developed a cheap, accessible method for at-home intaglio printmaking using reclaimed/recycled materials. Describing intaglio printing, Hough says, “It’s kind of like the opposite of a block print. For a block print, you carve away the parts that you don’t want ink on. But for this, you carve in the parts that you want to catch the ink.”

Intaglio, once commonly used in Europe for printmaking, has become largely obsolete, with very few modern commercial applications. However the unique textures and details possible with the process have kept it alive as an art medium. Hough makes good use of these qualities of the technique. Her prints of the desert landscape are delicate, highly detailed and rich with textures and shapes, creating an ethereal, mysterious mood.Jesse Hough

As the 2023 Community Artist in the Parks Hough spent the year plein air drawing and making prints on site in the national parks and monuments of southeast Utah. Currently she is working on more prints and drawings inspired by the local landscape, as well as experimenting with new paper and print techniques. She will demonstrate her printing process at Gallery Moab from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Friday, March 1, during the first Art Walk of 2024. Her homemade press is in itself a work of art! Be sure to ask her what new devices and techniques she is creating this year.

Enjoy browsing the wide variety of paintings, photography, prints, ceramics, sculpture, glass, fabric art and jewelry we have on display. Maybe you’ll find something that speaks to you or would delight someone special. Original art makes a great gift of love!

Open Sunday & Monday 12 – 3:00 p.m.; Tuesday through Saturday 12:00 – 6:00 p.m.
