GALLERY HAPPENINGS - January 2024
January at Gallery Moab
by Thea Nordling

Happy New Year! Thank you, Moab community and visitors, for your support in 2023. We wouldn’t be here without you! Our artist-owned and operated cooperative gallery features a variety of original fine art and crafts by local artists who celebrate the superb landscape we live in and find joy in sharing it through our art.

The darkness and quiet of winter is a time to rest, reflect on the past and recharge for the coming year as the sunlight slowly returns. Gallery Moab has been a labor of love since our humble beginning in 2014. Since then we have grown and thrived as individual artists and as a creative community. Along the way we have lost members but also gained new ones who have brought in fresh energy and vision.

Sadly, in December we lost our dear friend Mary Collar, who succumbed to a long-term auto-immune disease that was exacerbated by catching Covid on a long- awaited trip to New Zealand. She fought the illness bravely, but unfortunately her recovery was not to be. Mary was one of our founding members, donating generously to get Gallery Moab off the ground and giving freely of her time, energy and financial support through the years to ensure its survival. She was a kind, creative person, with a “can-do” positive attitude. Her passing has left a big hole in our hearts.

Mary grew up in a small town in central Wisconsin. Wanting a taste of the west she moved in1979 and was so taken with the clear skies, stars, gorgeous mountains, desert, and endless opportunities for outdoors adventures that she never looked back. It was in Moab, a quirky tourist town with a large community of artists, where she began to enjoy and collect local art. After retiring and taking a pastel class, she was hooked on creating her own art, becoming an accomplished pastelist and later exploring the possibilities of acrylics.

Help us celebrate Mary’s life by joining her family and friends at the gallery on Saturday, January 13 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. All are welcome to share memories of Mary, enjoy her art, and be part of the creative community she helped bring together. Refreshments will be provided.

We will be closed for cleaning and regrouping for the first two weeks of January, and will open again on Wednesday, January 10.
In cooperation with the Moab Music Festival we are hosting an informal pop-up “Winterlude” performance on Sunday, January 28 at 3:00 p.m. Call the gallery for details.

Sunday & Monday 12 – 3:00 p.m.;
Tuesday through Saturday 12:00 – 6:00 p.m.

Call 435-220-0891 and we will gladly open by appointment.
