GALLERY HAPPENINGS - October 2023
October at Gallery Moab
by Thea Nordling

We welcome the cool, brisk air, mellow sunlight, and glowing fall colors of October -- an energizing time of year for recreationists and artists alike! Our artist-owned and operated cooperative gallery is full of colorful art to celebrate the mood of the season.
"pollack canyon" by Barbara Churchley
Barbara Churchley, our October Guest Artist, a resident of western Colorado, is an avid hiker, skier, and runner. She expresses her lively spirit in pastel and oil paintings infused with vibrant color and bold brushwork, taking her viewers along on a journey into the alpine, pastoral and plateau landscapes she loves. She paints in an interpretive and impressionistic style, using bold, spontaneous strokes of vivid color without detail. Her work evokes the quiet feeling of being alone in nature.

Churchley is an award-winning artist with a long list of credentials. She is a Master Signature Member of the Pastel Society of Colorado, Signature Member of the American Impressionist Society, International Plein Air Painters, Plein Air Artists of Colorado and New Mexico, Contemporary Fine Artists International, and an Associate Member of Oil Painters of America and the Pastel Society of America. Recently her pastel “Valley Aspens” was awarded third place in the Master Signature Member division in the Pastel Society of Colorado’s 2023 Member Show in Grand Junction, CO. A dynamic and engaging instructor, she is teaching a workshop in pastel and oil here in Moab on October 5 and 6.

Multi-talented gallery member Janet Buckingham is our featured artist this month. She has worked as a writer and poet most of her life, but painting and quilting are also a big part of her creative repertoire. Initially working in pastel, she switched to primarily watercolor and ink around 2008. Lately she has been playing with pastels again and trying new techniques with watercolor. She often transfers her images to cotton fabric, which she then integrates into striking quilted bags and wall hangings. Buckingham is inspired by the local canyons and cliffs, especially Arches National Park, one of her favorite subjects. She says, “I love trying to recreate the feeling of wonder and awe of the night sky in my work.” She is happiest out on the trails with her dog Crosby and her husband Robert.

During the 32 years Buckingham has lived in Moab she has generously shared her creative talents as the Community Artist in the Parks in 2018 and as guest artist/teacher for the HMK Elementary School program “Look Where We Live.” She will be teaching a class in pastels for the Moab Folk Camp in late October.
