GALLERY HAPPENINGS - August 2023
August at Gallery Moab
by Thea Nordling

Wise Guys by Cynthia SampsonGallery Moab is a cooperative owned and operated by a group of local artists who create original fine art and one-of-a-kind crafts inspired by our unique landscape. Each has a different personal style and favorite medium of expression including oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, printing, photography, ceramics, wood, metal, glass, fabric and jewelry. Each month we invite a different regional artist to display work on our front wall, so there’s always something new, fresh, and exciting to delight the eye.

Colorado artist Cynthia Sampson brings a blast of color and intriguing imagery to our guest wall in August. She is an award-winning artist who specializes in brightly colored, vibrant pastel and acrylic paintings of animals which give viewers a glimpse into her world. She boldly uses color to express the excitement and wonder she feels when she looks at life.

Moon Walkers by Cynthia Sampson“Ravens have always fascinated me,” Sampson explains.” I love their humor and intelligence. I created ‘Wise Guys’ showing ravens on a ribbon rainbow over Delicate Arch to capture the town of Moab’s welcoming spirit of acceptance and inclusivity to locals and travelers from all over the world. Moon Walkers came from childhood stories of the moon being made out of cheese, Swiss of course. My other raven paintings are inspired by life events and a trip I made to New Orleans. The raven is my muse and helper. I am the voodoo doll and my little dog Lilo, who passed at the age of sixteen, is in all of the paintings as my spirit guide.”

Sampson recounts that even as a child she was drawn to use the brightest crayons in the box, drawing zebras in vibrant colors and purple and yellow tigers, hence the name of her studio, “Zebra Jazz.” It was Sampson’s intense use of color that grabbed the attention of Ste. Michelle Wine Estates. Her pastel painting “Wild Horses” graced their 14 Hands and Stampede wine labels for over twenty years. Her artwork continues to win awards and has been published in the Wildlife Art Magazine, the Pastel Journal, Horses in Art, Spirit of the Road RV magazine and Telluride Style as well as numerous newspaper articles. Sampson has had several solo shows and has paintings in private and corporate collections across the United States, Canada and Europe. Finding My Marbles by Cynthia Sampson
