GALLERY HAPPENINGS - July 2023
July at Gallery Moab
by Thea Nordling

Beat the midsummer heat and enjoy a visual feast at Gallery Moab, a cooperative gallery owned and operated by a group of local artists who create original fine art and artisan crafts inspired by a deep connection to our unique landscape. Each of us has a different point of view and a personal style. We work in a variety of mediums including oils and acrylics, watercolor, pastel, prints, photography, wood and metal sculpture, glass, fabric and jewelry. You’ll find something here for every taste and budget. Each month we invite a different regional artist to display their work on our front wall, so there’s always something new, fresh, and exciting to delight the eye.

Megan Rieker, our July Guest Artist is a skilled landscape, portrait and plein air artist, as well as an inspirational public speaker. She grew up in Maryland in a family of eight. Encouraged by family and teachers to pursue her inborn love of art, she attended Maryland Institute College of Art, where she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in General Fine Arts and a Masters’ Degree in Art Teaching. There she met and married Mark Rieker in 1992. They raised three boys while traveling with Mark’s military postings to upstate New York, Germany, Italy, Korea, Colorado Springs CO, Goodyear AZ, and Washington DC. They finally moved to Pleasant Grove Utah in 2022.

Rieker describes in her video “The Origins of Inspiration” an alarming health crisis in 2000 that became a path to her true calling to paint religious subjects. Her deeply held faith carried her through this trial and overcame her self-doubt, giving her the strength and conviction to trust her talents. In 2000 she began the “Women of Inspiration” series about women throughout LDS history and the ideals and values taught in the gospel. For the past 22 years she has been speaking publicly about art, religion and women. She states that the purpose of her work and public speaking is “to uplift and inspire others to reach for our potential as children of God.” As of fall 2022 she is now dedicating her time to painting and speaking. Her paintings have been featured in books, videos, museums, temple visitor’s centers, galleries and book covers and have appeared in regional art shows. Her art will be featured in the gallery throughout July.

Join us to visit with Rieker at a special reception at the gallery on Saturday, July 1st, 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Enjoy an evening of refreshments and mingling with local artists and art lovers.
