GALLERY HAPPENINGS - June 2023
June at Gallery Moab
by Thea Nordling

Photo by Whit RichardsonAfter a day of fun in the sun Gallery Moab is the perfect place to cool off and relax! We are a cooperative gallery owned and operated by a group of local artists who work in a variety of mediums and styles to express our deep connection to this remarkable landscape and share our creations with you. We offer fine art and one-of-a-kind artisan crafts for every taste and budget. Each month we host a special guest artist and feature one of our own members.

June Guest Artist Whit Richardson has shot hundreds of thousands of photos over the last 30 years. He grew up in Boulder, Colorado, where his initial interest in photography was sparked in his late teens as he started taking photos of his outdoors adventures. A trip to Nepal in 1991 and a subsequent move to Telluride CO in 1992 ignited this interest into a deeper passion for photography, his eventual career. He specializes in photographing outdoor adventure, landscapes, and architecture, and has shot photos for many big-name outdoor brands and magazines, as well as for realtors, builders, and architects. He adds, “And of course all the photos I take with no commercial agenda, I just like taking photos. “

Richardson, describing his move to Moab, explains, “Throughout this time, I regularly visited the desert, and by 2004 I decided it would make more sense to live in Moab, and visit the mountains instead of the other way around. My free time is spent riding bikes, hiking, backpacking, skiing, canyoneering, and generally exploring the outdoors.” The rich light and strong perspective in his stunning images pull one right into the experience of expansive, dramatic spaces.

Deborah McDermott, our featured gallery artist this month, is drawn to the intimate within the bigger scene. She started to notice lichen for the first time when she moved to Moab. On her walks among the boulders at the base of the Moab Rim, she began taking close-up photos of lichens, thinking that one day she might make some artwork based on them. After several years of ruminating, she started making linocut monoprints and acrylic paintings inspired by shapes, textures, and colors of lichens. These are currently on her wall at Gallery Moab. The lichens are depicted many times larger than life size, making it possible for her to see and paint their miniature structures, which she thinks of as micro-landscapes. She explains, “While I worked on the 18x24” painting I call “Rough Terrain,” I felt as if I were slowly exploring the surface of a complex landscape.” She adds, “I love looking at maps and images that show our earth from above. Looking at lichen on rocks is a similar experience.”
