GALLERY HAPPENINGS - February 2023
February at Gallery Moab
by Thea Nordling

This is the month to celebrate love! Who or what most touches your heart? Our kids, of course, top the list. The 5th Annual Helen M. Knight Elementary Student Invitational art show, opening on Friday February 3, has long been a favorite with the Moab community, sure to bring a smile to your face!

For the past 5 years, HMK Visual Arts Educator Bruce Hucko, a.k.a. “Art Coach!” has partnered with Gallery Moab to showcase extra-curricular work created by some of his most enthusiastic art students. He says, “What really stirs me is when a child shows me what art they do on their own, after the bell at the end of the day has rung. Some will whisper to me that they painted last weekend, others will pull their sketchbook out of their pack to show what they’ve drawn in the quick moment before the tardy bell rings. They are really quite excited to show me and I’m just as excited to see the work.”

Each of the invited artists created new work either at home or at a January after school paint party where Art Coach! opened the art studio, laid out snacks and then sat in the corner and watched his students create. “Just great!” he mused. “They went right at it and I knew they’d all given their ideas plenty of thought. They just needed enough time and safe place to put their ideas to paint. That’s my job!”

The artists featured are: Zoe Bastian, 5th; Logan Vigil, 6th; Avery McFarland, 4th; Stella Honour, 4th; Mikey Hymas, 3rd; Danielle Johnson, 2nd; Sadie Hadler, 3rd; Pearl Cameron, 1st; Lily Villapondo Salas, 6th; Daniel Codina, 5th; Aspen Dalton, 6th.

A reception will be held on Friday, February 3 from 3:00 to 5:00 pm, with the artists introduced at 3:30 pm. Come join their families, friends and fans to celebrate the playfulness, imagination and creativity shown in their works. It’s a great tonic for the late-winter blues. The show will be at the gallery through February.

While you’re here, browse the gallery’s vibrant diversity of original fine art and artisan crafts. Our talented artists work in many different mediums, and each has a unique vision and personal style of expression. We have something to appeal to every taste and budget. One of the gallery artists is always on hand to answer your questions and help you find the perfect memento of your visit or gift for your special Valentine!

And speaking of love, our artist-owned and operated cooperative gallery has been a labor of love dedicated to fostering a vibrant art scene in Moab since 2014. With the encouragement and support of our community and visitors we have grown and thrived over the years since we opened. Thank you, one and all, for supporting local artists and our talented kids!
Open Sunday and Monday 12 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.; Tuesday through Saturday 12 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Call 435-220-0891 and we will gladly open by appointment during other hours.

Avery McFarland has sketched her “what falls from a tree” idea and is ready to turn it to paint. The tree has become a book and the leaves pages. What a wonderful idea! Librarians are smiling. Daniel Codina has a penchant for assembling geometric-abstract art that illustrates his clear and methodical mind. Pearl Cameron, a first grade student, has created a detailed dragon in pen and watercolor. Squat down to look her in the eye and ask her for the story about it!
