GALLERY HAPPENINGS September 2022

September at Gallery Moab
by Thea Nordling
Buzzar’s Roots Reflection by Nancy Lewis

The cusp of summer and fall is such an energizing time of year! We all rouse from our summer torpor and venture out to savor the cooling days and subtle change in colors. The mellowing sunlight and lengthening shadows draw painters and photographers outside to capture the mood of the season en plein air (in the open air.)

Nancy Lewis, Gallery Moab’s Guest Artist, combines her love of the great outdoors, traveling and painting. Creating art outside in the fresh air is her passion and inspiration for her landscape painting. She works in oils, watercolors and pastels, using bold brush or pastel marks, dynamic values, and a unique approach to color that invite the viewer into her art to explore her play on lights and darks and expressive textures.

Born and raised in Rhode Island, Lewis loved painting salt water marshes, the nighttime shore line of Narragansett Bay and quaint fishing harbors off the east coast. After graduating from high school, she attended the Cleveland Institute of Art, finishing the five-year program with a Bachelor of Fine Art degree. The very next day after graduation, she headed to Colorado to “find her fame and fortune.” She still lives and does most of her painting in western Colorado and continues to work on that fame and fortune idea.Reflected Light at Independence Monument by Nancy Lewis

Lewis is actively involved with the regional art community, sharing her talents and enthusiasm to help others grow and thrive as artists. She participates in many plein air events and art exhibits in local, regional and national shows, often garnering awards. She has taught at Colorado Mesa University, Arapahoe Community College and the Colorado Institute of Art, and currently teaches art and workshops in watercolors, oils and pastels to individuals and group classes. She is the Western Slope Paint-Out Coordinator for Plein Air Artist Colorado. She provides free art classes for suicide prevention. Her oil, pastel and watercolor paintings are on exhibit and for sale at the Blue Pig Gallery in Palisade, Colorado.

Join us for a reception to meet Lewis during Art Walk on Saturday, September 10, 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Her paintings will hang at the gallery for the entire month of September, in case you can’t make the reception.
