GALLERY HAPPENINGS August 2022

August at Gallery Moab
by Thea Nordling

Extreme heat grabs the headlines almost every day, with drought, fire and record-breaking temperatures making life ever more of a challenge. Had enough of it? Step out of the inferno and into Gallery Moab to cool off and refresh your eyes and spirit! We feature a diverse selection of original art and hand-made crafts inspired by our spectacular landscape and the forces that have shaped it.

Torrid temperatures can be a creative as well as a destructive force. Our August Guest Artist, Joanne Savoie, will be showing a collection of her ceramic art entitled “Some Chemistry of Extreme Heat.” She has “thrown” her pottery around Moab for several decades. Her designs and inspirations come from the mountains, rivers and canyons of this place she calls home.

Describing her creative process, Savoie says, “The geologic exposures of erosion by wind, water and fire, create the textures, patterns, colors and possibilities for artistic expressions. Extreme heat, fire, is a necessary chemical agent in ceramics. It is a fickle variable and controlling factor in what ceramic artists ultimately ‘do’ with clay.” She goes on to say, “This exhibit is a sharing of some of these fickle and controlling results: the fires and finishes. Electric Kiln fires, Raku fires, Obvara Finishes, Pit Fires are some of these extreme heat processes.”

Savoie says she is always learning and re-learning, and enjoys opportunities to share and explore ceramic finishes. Take the opportunity to meet her and see what is fresh out of her kiln at a reception at Gallery Moab on Saturday, August 13, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Her works will be featured through the end of the month, so stop by any time if you can’t make it to the reception.

Our artist-owned and operated cooperative gallery is dedicated to supporting local artists and building community through the arts. Our talented artists and artisans express what moves them through many different styles and mediums including paintings, photography, prints, cards, wood carvings, sculpture, fabric arts, fused glass and jewelry. There is something at Gallery Moab for every taste and budget. One of the artists is always on hand to answer your questions and help you find that perfect gift or memento of your canyon country experience. We look forward to your visit!

Open Sunday and Monday 12 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.; Tuesday through Saturday 12 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Call 435-220-0891 and we will gladly open by appointment during other hours

The Women’s Business Center of Utah is Celebrating its 25th Anniversary

The Women’s Business Center of Utah is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. For over 2 decades we have been helping to empower Women, by giving them the resources they need to make sound decisions in their businesses. Whether you’re in the start up phase and have questions about proper bookkeeping, have been in business for some time already & want to know more about keeping up with the latest social media marketing trends, or just have a great idea you want to explore, with information on registering your business, getting access to capital & working on a business plan, we are here to help. We provide free, one on one advising consultations, virtual & in person trainings (including webinars & business classes), and resource connections.

Last year we launched a free online directory of businesses owned by Women in the state of Utah. To date, there are over 1500 businesses on there, with over 75 just in Moab (a number I know we can increase)! This site; utahwomenowned.com, is a great way to support Women both locally and regionally, but also a way to network with other Women business owners around the state.

When you sign up for our resources at https://business.wbcutah.org/member/newmemberapp/ , you can also request to be listed in our directory; https://utahwomenowned.com/ with one checked box. It only takes a few minutes and is 100% free, no obligation advertising for your business!

If you would like to know more about the Women’s business center of Utah, you can check out our website at www.wbcutah.org and email me: sarah@wbcutah.org
