2021 was a banner year for Gallery Moab! Thanks to the support of the Moab community and our visitors, our cooperative gallery grew and thrived. We are optimistic that 2022 will be another rewarding and successful year as a showcase for the talents of local artists.

We welcome Amber Honour as a new member artist. Growing up in Moab’s colorful landscape and vibrant art community fueled her creativity since childhood. “I’ve been an artist for as long as I can remember, spending countless hours as a kid drawing anything that happened to be in front of me,” she says. She later moved on to photography and then oil painting. “I took a long hiatus from art in my 20s,” she recounts, “but after moving back to my hometown with my young family, I picked it back up again… [and] did a deep dive into learning everything I could about oil painting.” At first she worked slowly, working on one painting for weeks, but after discovering the daily painting movement (finishing 30 paintings in 30 days) she was hooked on working faster. She says, “I do still occasionally work longer on some pieces, however, I prefer how a painting comes together in one sitting. While oil is my main love in art, I’m also drawn to ink and gouache.”

Deborah Mc Dermott, our featured artist, is a prolific printmaker who never fails to surprise with new and original ways of seeing and interpreting intimate details of the landscape. Her newest work is a series of prints inspired by the shape, texture, and color of the lichens she noticed growing on rocks, thinking that somehow they would become a visual subject to explore in her linocut printmaking. That happened this year. She explains her process for creating this recent work: “I cut oversized and life-sized shapes of lichen out of linoleum, gouged interior surface textures, rolled them with ink and started printing. I worked in an ‘organic’ way, arranging the lichen shapes on, and sometimes going off the edges of the picture plane.” She adds, “I let the lichen prints suggest other ideas to me and to the viewer. These ideas are suggested in my titles: Networks, Creation, Pathways, and Virus.” The prints you see in the gallery are Monoprints, or one-of-a-kind prints, not printed in editions. Still exploring the subject, Deborah says, ”I am allowing the lichen to lead my way.”

One of the artists is always on hand to answer your questions and help you find that perfect gift or memento.
