STUNTS, STARS & LEGENDS - May 2015

Joe Canutt

The son of Yakima Canutt was the stunt double for Charlton Heston for over thirty years .. In Ben-Hur, Soylent Green, Earthquake, The Last Hard Men ... He was stunt-coordinator on Planet of the Apes, in which he played the primitive human who fought with Taylor after he had destroyed the worlds Taylor had scrawled in the dirt floor of their stockade. “I remember one day we’d been working very hard, running around in the thickets and so on, jumping over bushes and then I had to go back. I was president of the Screen Actors Guild then, and I had to leave early because I was going to do some negotiations. And I said to Joe who doubled me on all that stuff, I said ‘Joe, could you do these last two setups for me?’ He said ‘No’. I said, ‘What do you mean, Joe? No, why no? He said, ‘You’ve been working all day in poison ivy’ I said, ‘No kidding?’ He said, ‘You’ll find out tomorrow.’ I did”- Charlton Heston. Joe is an honored inductee into the Hollywood Stuntmen’s Hall of Fame.

Movies Made in Moab:

JOHN CARTER - It is a 2012 American fantasy adventure film by Andrew Stanton. The film marks the centennial of the character’s first appearance.
PLOT: After the sudden death of John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), a former American Civil War Confederate Army captain, Carter’s nephew, Edgar Rice Burroughs (Daryl Sabara), attends the funeral. As per Carter’s instructions, the body is put in a tomb that can be unlocked only from the inside. His attorney hands over Carter’s personal journal for Burroughs to read, in the hope of finding clues explaining Carter’s cause of death. The film reverts to the present, where Burroughs runs back to Carter’s tomb and opens it, only to find it empty. Matai Shang, who had been following Carter over the 10 years he’d returned in the form of a man with a bowler hat appears holding a knife, having followed Burroughs. But as he prepares to kill Burroughs, both himself and Burroughs see the tomb as empty. Carter then appears and shoots Matai Shang, killing him. Carter then tells Burroughs that he never found a medallion. Instead, he devised a scheme to lure a Thern into revealing himself in order to get that Thern’s medallion. After suggesting to Burroughs that he enjoy his life on Earth and to try writing books (alluding to the fact that Burroughs is the real-life author of the “Barsoom” novels”, Carter takes the Thern’s medallion, whispers the code, and is then transported back to Barsoom.
