GALLERY HAPPENINGS April 2017

April at Gallery Moab

Annie BatesThis month we are pleased to spotlight the work of two talented artists. Annie Bates, a jewelry artist from Bayfield, Colorado has work on consignment at Gallery Moab. Charlotte Quigley, a Moab pastel artist and 4th grade teacher, is our guest artist for the month of April. A reception in their honor will be held during the April Art Walk, Saturday, April 8, 2017, from 5-9pm.

Annie Bates spent 26 years as an Interior Designer. But that passion has now “morphed” into another. She uses her finely tuned sense of design to create wearable Jewelry Art. She writes; “The collection I show here at Gallery Moab is all about the beauty of nature and history of the Southwest…focusing on rich, earthy artisan materials and putting them together with a fresh twist. Stones of the earth, leather, luminous metals and local artisan Raku Beads, artisan charms and clasps come together to create pieces that are unique, exciting, and very wearable for today’s lifestyle of casual elegance. The pieces must be tried on to fully appreciate their beauty.”

Charlotte QuigleyOur guest artist for April is Charlotte Quigley. She writes, “I love creating works of art and find that the enjoyment of the process is just as important to me as the final product. After studying art history, working in several art museums and art councils, and teaching art in elementary school, I came to Moab, where I found a wonderfully supportive pastel group. I had worked in many other media, but have come to love the vibrancy of the pastel colors and the diverse way in which you can use it to depict the incredible landscape that surrounds us here. Besides working in pastels, I have found a rewarding use of creativity by teaching fourth grade at HMK. I’m enjoying the process of growing and developing as an artist and have decided to share some of my interpretations of our local environment with you.”

Gallery Moab is located at 87 North Main Street, conveniently sandwiched between the Quesadilla Mobilla, and Back of Beyond Bookstore. It is a cooperative gallery, owned, operated, and staffed by its members, and sells a wide variety of our creative work including ceramics, paintings in oil, acrylic, alcohol ink, and watercolor, pastels, block prints, jewelry, photography, and creations in fabric and mosaics. OPEN 6 days a week, 11-7pm. Closed on Tuesdays. Visit us at gallerymoab.com or Facebook.

And be sure to mention you heard about it in the Moab Happenings.

"Between Dream and Reality" Bighorn Gallery

The ethereal art of French self-taught photographer Patrick Paul René makes its debut at the Bighorn Gallery, Dead Horse Point State Park through April 28th. Patrick Paul Rene Photography

René’s passion for the majesty of the Colorado Plateau has its roots in his earlier life as an explorer of the Alps in the Dauphine region of France. A resident of Moab, the artist first set eyes on the American Southwest more than three decades ago.

Through a palette of pseudo “paintings,” the artist presents fresh interpretations of subjects that have long enchanted visitors to the area. Where we view a broken down vehicle, a deserted ranch, or even familiar landscapes in Canyon Country, René sees captivating lines, textures, pensive moods, and the chance to create tantalizing visual experiences.

Patrick Paul Rene Photography“The possibility of capturing perfection in a photograph keeps my passion high and my vision in harmony with nature’s solitude and beauty,” says the artist. “Each time I set out to catch those fleeting moments, I feel the excitement and confident expectation that keeps my spirit filled with awe and inspiration.”

René works with emotion to offer a vision of the magnificent light in the American Southwest as it changes from day to day, season to season. While exploring and expanding areas that arouse his curiosity, he revisits favorite sites to capture the ever-changing moods of the vast and wild landscape that inspires his creativity.

During the exhibition, René’s images, prints and note cards will be available for purchase. Dead Horse Point State Park is located nine miles north of Moab on US 191, and 23 miles south on SR 313. The visitor center is open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. for the season. Park admission is $15. For more information, contact the park at 435-259-2614.
And be sure to mention you heard about it in the Moab Happenings.
