GALLERY HAPPENINGS February 2017

February at Gallery Moab
by Thea Nordling

Jeff DurrantEscape the cold gray days of winter by stepping into Gallery Moab to bask in the colorful ambience created by our talented local artists. We are a cooperative gallery, completely owned and operated by member artists who work in a variety of mediums and styles. In addition to paintings, you’ll find photographs, ceramics, wood carvings, mosaics, metalwork, jewelry, and fabric art on display, as well as prints and cards.

Our mission is to enrich, empower and support local artists and build community through the arts. We welcome new artists to join us. Being a gallery member is a great opportunity to connect with a fun, supportive group of other artists and showcase your art in a highly visible location. If interested, call the gallery to make an appointment to meet with our Board members.

Jeff DurrantOur newest member is Jeff Durrant. He graduated in International Relations and pursued a doctorate in Geography at the University of Hawaii. As part of his doctoral research he moved to Moab to work as a river guide, and published “Struggle Over Utah’s San Rafael Swell: Wilderness, National Conservation Areas, and National Monuments” with the University of Arizona Press.

Jeff met his wife Marie in Park City, where she was working as a snowboard instructor. He followed her when she left for a Peace Corps assignment to Chad, Africa, and they were married there. Jeff has visited over 100 countries, but Africa remains his passion. He regularly leads trips to Mount Kilimanjaro where he lived with his wife and three sons. Since settling in Castle Valley, Utah, Jeff has focused more on art. He uses many different mediums, but most of his works are loosely rendered acrylics expressing his fascination with the rugged landscapes around Castle Valley and his interest in “motorcycles with a soul.” If he isn’t painting, you can often find him hiking and paddling.Jeff Durrant

Meet Jeff and enjoy his art at a reception at Gallery Moab on February 11 from 6 to 9 p.m. As an added bonus there will be chocolates galore to indulge your sweet tooth! And while you’re browsing the gallery, you just might find the perfect gift for your Valentine (or for yourself!) among the wide variety of art and craft items on display. We offer something for every taste and budget.

We look forward to your visit!
