GALLERY HAPPENINGS September 2015

Gallery Moab
by Thea Nordling

Moab’s art scene kicks into high gear as summer ends, with exciting events for artists and art lovers scheduled over the next couple of months. Gallery Moab, a cooperative gallery showcasing local art, will be serving as a central hub for information about these events.

The Moab Artists Studio Tour, on Labor Day weekend, is an opportunity to visit 17 local artists in their studios in Moab and Castle Valley. Meet these artists before the Moab Music Festival’s Star Hall concert and during intermission on Friday, September 4. On Saturday and Sunday, September 5 and 6 their studios will be open to the public from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Stop by at the gallery for directions and tour maps.

Accomplished Colorado oil and pastel painter Barbara Churchley is our September Guest Artist. Her interpretive and impressionistic paintings reflect her close personal connection with the western landscape. Her work has been juried into numerous prestigious art shows and has appeared in nationally circulated art publications. She is an active member of several professional organizations dedicated to pastel, oil and plein air painting. Her work will be shown in the gallery from September 11 through October 8.

Churchley will teach a one-day plein air pastel painting workshop, “Capturing a Big World on a Small Canvas,” on October 7 during Le Petit Plein Air Moab. This workshop will help both novice and experienced painters meet the challenge of painting outdoors while having fun, too. Get details and register at www.pleinairmoab.com.

Sharing Gallery Moab’s limelight in September will be the dynamic duo of Robin Straub and Phil Wagner, both known for exuberant use of vivid color and bold brushwork in their expressionistic oil and acrylic paintings. Straub describes her painting process as “not unlike exploring an unknown canyon in the desert - a rich, exciting experiment in color, sometimes whimsical like the raven, sometimes like a breath-taking sudden rain across a vast landscape.” Wagner characterizes himself as a painter who once taught poetry and art in a mental institution, lectured in psychology, did grad work in law and economics, lived by his wits in Europe for years, and made anti-war documentary films. He states that “Successful art isn’t just another pretty picture.”

Join us at a reception for Churchley, Straub and Wagner on Saturday, September 12 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Come meet these lively artists, enjoy the colorful ambience, and mingle with the gallery artists and other art lovers.

There is always something going on at Gallery Moab! New items and new artists appear regularly, so stop by often. A variety of original art for sale includes paintings, photography, wood carvings, ceramics, mosaics, metalwork, and more. Cards, prints, and smaller items make wonderful gifts and souvenirs.
