GALLERY HAPPENINGS - May 2024
May at Gallery Moab
by Thea Nordling

Gallery Moab is a cooperative owned and operated by local artists who create fine art and artisan crafts celebrating the spirit and beauty of our landscape. Our member artists work in a wide variety of mediums and styles. Each month we invite a special guest artist to exhibit their work to further showcase the diversity of regional artistic talent.

Joe Day, our Guest Artist for May, expresses his love of the western landscape and lifestyle in oil, graphite and watercolor. Born in Ogden, Utah, he grew up in Vancouver, Washington, and has spent many of his winter and summer vacations in Moab, drawn to the allure of the desert Southwest. He and his wife currently live in Peoria, Arizona.
Creative since young childhood, Day recounts his grandmother finding him at the kitchen table sketching a bird sitting outside the window. Her surprise gift of a bird book full of reference images inspired him, and throughout his childhood he spent countless hours sketching. In high school, he sold his drawings and did commissioned portraits to earn money for art supplies and oil painting classes. He diligently studied his favorite artists and their techniques to help advance his art. He was strongly influenced by masters like Charles M. Russell, Fredric Remington, Norman Rockwell, Robert Bateman, and his personal tutor Stan Capon.

Day had a 20-year career in the corporate business world. Despite a demanding schedule, he maintained his true passion for fine art, spending many evenings sketching and painting, patiently waiting for the right time to fulfill his dream of becoming a full-time artist. After supporting three children through college he resigned from his job to pursue art full-time. Day’s work can be recognized by his precise detail, realistic authenticity, and the ability to capture the spirit of his subject. He has been invited to be in national shows, exhibits, and art auctions, and his work is in private collections throughout the country.

Day says, “Using pencils and oils to capture the beauty of the American West has been my desire for a very long time. The focus of my artistic work has always been to create wonder, excitement, and appreciation for the beauty that surrounds me. I intend to use my art to tell a story about the subjects that have always captured my attention and given me pleasure, particularly the wildlife, landscapes, and people of the American West. I want the viewer to feel the drama, mystery, and atmosphere of a western life. I want them to get lost in the brush strokes of a painting and the pencil lines of a graphite drawing.”

Join us to meet Day and celebrate his work at Art Walk, Friday, May 3, 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. His art will hang in the gallery throughout May.
